In Special Relations, the player uses a VR headset to transform into a game character who wakes
up in their room. Her goals are to complete a job and seek knowledge and time. She has to earn
money for rent and food. She wants to live somewhere other than an environment filled with cars.
Her existence normally takes place in front of a computer screen and in dreams. These dreams
begin to overlap with reality and memories. Before long, her body’s natural reactions hit her again,
calling for a different way of living. Through audiovisual sensations we learn the circumstances of
her mode of alternating tiredness and imagination.
The story that the player can experience through the eyes of the game’s hero(es) can be divided
into several levels that have a direct relationship to real places and the themes or symbolism
associated with them. The story is localized in the Czech Republic, the starting area is set during
the pandemic period in Prague. The levels take place in different times, but also in the past, and
are seen in the game as dreams that build on each other and gradually intertwine with the reality
taking place in the city. These levels are set in locations other than the aforementioned room and
city: the factory, the forest, the cloud water (mine), Central Europe, Europe, cities, Earth. As the
game progresses, the objectives change, the areas where the player can go (the city acts as a
semi-open level).
The artistic research was conducted as a two-year project within the framework of the Research
Project Competition of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.
